| Getting around in Kenya and Uganda |
| Getting around in Kenya and Uganda does not take guts, you just have to be willing to not be in a hurry, possibly loose half a day getting an hour down the road, and perhaps get stopped by the police and be forced to walk the last 2 miles..... but thats Africa... If your up for the challenge, it's a good experience, and a great way to get involved with the local people. The train runs from Kisumu to Nairobi to Mombassa, and back, but only on opposite days, and pretty much at night. Be sure to book tickets a day or so ahead, especially during peak season. The train NEVER runs on time, so bring some snacks and don't be in a hurry. It's a really fun experience, and hey, it's Africa, so chill out and take in the scenery. Matatus go when they please, but it's still a good way to see the countryside. Check the price before getting on board, if quoted 100Ksh, it's probably 50Ksh... Boda Bodas are fun for short trips, but try and stay out of the traffic. Again, get a price quote BEFORE going, it's usually the cheapest way to go, so 20Ksh is average. Tuk Tuk is a three wheeled motor bike, lots of fun, pretty safe, and gets you there in a hurry. It's anywhere from 50Ksh to 100Ksh to zip across town. Easy Coach, Mololine, and Akamba are the main busses that run. Fee's are higher, and non-negotiable, but safety at night is better with these guys. Go to any of their booking offices for reservations. |
